Your Guide to a Smooth Recovery After Gum Treatment

Whether you have just completed a Gum Graft , Pocket Reduction, the success of the procedure depends heavily on how you care for your mouth in the first 72 hours. At our Novo Care clinic in the Tesfaye Gizachew Building, we provide every patient with a customized recovery plan.

The First 24 Hours: Managing Comfort

  • Avoid Disturbance: Do not pull back your lips to “check” the surgical site. This can pull on the sutures and ruin the graft.
  • Cold Compress: Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek in 20-minute intervals to minimize swelling.
  • Rest: Keep your head elevated when sleeping to reduce throbbing and pressure.

Nutrition for Healing

For the first week, stick to a “no-chew” or “soft-chew” diet.

  • Safe Foods: Cold soups, yogurt, mashed avocados, scrambled eggs, and protein shakes.
  • Avoid: Hot coffee, spicy foods, crunchy chips, and anything with small seeds (like strawberries) that could get trapped in the surgical site.

Oral Hygiene Adjustments

Do not brush the treated area until your specialist gives the green light. Instead, we may prescribe a specialized antimicrobial mouthwash to keep the site clean without mechanical scrubbing.
