Periodontal Maintenance: Why Your 6-Month Cleaning Isn’t Enough

Once you have been treated for periodontal disease, you are considered a “maintenance” patient. Because gum disease is a chronic condition—much like diabetes or high blood pressure it requires ongoing management to prevent it from returning. This is where Periodontal Maintenance differs from a standard 6-month cleaning.

The 3-Month Rule

Research shows that the bacteria responsible for gum disease repopulate and begin damaging the bone every 90 days. For this reason, we recommend that patients who have undergone Deep Cleaning return every three months rather than every six.

  • Monitoring Pockets: We measure your gum pockets at every visit to ensure they aren’t deepening again.
  • Subgingival Cleaning: We focus on the areas below the gum line where your toothbrush cannot reach.

Stability is the Goal

Maintenance is about keeping the disease in “remission.” By staying on a 3-month schedule, we can catch minor flare-ups before they turn into major infections, saving you from the need for repeat surgeries or Dental Implants.
