Most parents think orthodontic treatment begins when all the adult teeth have come through — typically around age 12 or 13. For many children, this timing is fine. But for others, waiting that long means missing a window when treatment is not only simpler but significantly more effective.
Invisalign First is a phase-one orthodontic system designed specifically for children aged 6 to 10 whose mouths are still developing — targeting problems at the stage when the jaw, bone, and emerging teeth are most responsive to guidance.
NovoCare is a certified Invisalign provider in Addis Ababa. We are one of the few clinics in Ethiopia offering Invisalign First as a dedicated early-treatment programme alongside our full Invisalign range for teenagers and adults.
What Is Invisalign First — and How Is It Different?
Invisalign First is not simply a smaller version of adult aligners. It is a system designed around the specific biology of a growing mouth:
It works alongside developing teeth. Children in the 6–10 age range still have a mix of baby teeth and emerging adult teeth. Invisalign First trays are designed to accommodate this mixed dentition — they can be fabricated with spaces for teeth that haven’t yet erupted, and they guide the incoming teeth into better positions as they emerge.
It addresses jaw development, not just tooth position. Some of the most common orthodontic problems — narrow arches, crossbites, severe crowding — originate in the jaw, not just in individual tooth positions. Phase-one treatment at the right age can expand the arch and create space for incoming teeth, often reducing or eliminating the need for extractions or more complex treatment later.
It uses the same removable aligner technology as standard Invisalign. The trays are clear, comfortable, and removable for eating, brushing, and sports. Children find them significantly more comfortable than traditional expanders or fixed appliances used in early orthodontic treatment.
Who Is a Candidate for Invisalign First?
An orthodontic assessment at NovoCare will determine whether early treatment is appropriate for your child. Invisalign First is commonly recommended for children showing:
- Crowding — not enough space for emerging adult teeth
- Crossbite — upper and lower teeth meeting incorrectly on one or both sides
- Narrow arch — the upper jaw is narrower than it should be, causing teeth to crowd or overlap
- Spacing issues — gaps that may affect how incoming teeth erupt
- Habit-related changes — thumb-sucking or prolonged pacifier use that has affected jaw shape
Not every 6–10 year old needs phase-one treatment. Our orthodontist will give you an honest assessment — if early treatment is not indicated, we will tell you, and we will plan the right timing for treatment when it is.
What Happens After Invisalign First?
Phase-one treatment addresses the specific developmental problem — jaw width, arch shape, or tooth position — that is most important to treat early. After this phase, many children enter an observation period as the remaining adult teeth continue to erupt. A second phase of orthodontic treatment (phase two) may follow in the early teenage years to finalise alignment.
The goal of phase one is not to complete orthodontic treatment in full — it is to create the best possible conditions for the adult dentition and reduce the complexity and duration of any future treatment.
