Early Orthodontic Evaluation for Kids: Setting the Stage for Straight Teeth

Many parents assume that they should wait until their child is a teenager and all their adult teeth have erupted before considering orthodontics. However, modern dentistry strongly recommends a different approach.

The “Age 7” Rule
The global standard dictates that a child should have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. By this age, a child typically has a mix of baby and adult teeth. This allows our specialized orthodontic team at Novo Care to spot subtle issues with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present.

What Are We Looking For? During an early evaluation, we assess:

  • Bite Alignment: Checking for severe overbites, underbites, or crossbites.
  • Crowding: Determining if the jaw is wide enough to accommodate the incoming permanent teeth.
  • Habits: Identifying how prolonged thumb-sucking or mouth-breathing might be altering the shape of the jaw.

The Benefits of Early Intervention (Phase 1 Treatment) While not every child will need early treatment, for those who do, it can be life-changing. “Phase 1” orthodontics can guide the growth of the jaw, create room for crowded teeth, and significantly reduce the need for tooth extractions or complex braces treatment when they are older. It is a proactive investment in your child’s future confidence.
