For Ethiopians living in Washington DC, London, Dubai, Toronto, or Melbourne, a visit home is rarely just a visit. It is a compressed window of time in which family is seen, errands are run, and often quietly, practically significant healthcare needs are addressed.
Dental treatment is one of the most common healthcare decisions diaspora Ethiopians make during home visits. The reasons are consistent across communities and continents: the cost of dental care abroad is prohibitive for comprehensive treatment; the wait times in public healthcare systems can stretch longer than a visit home; and there is for many diaspora patients a genuine preference to receive significant personal healthcare in a familiar environment, close to family, in a city they know.
At Novo Care, we serve a substantial number of diaspora patients every year. We have refined our treatment planning process to serve patients whose window of time in Addis Ababa is defined and limited. This article explains how we do it — and how you can plan your dental care before you arrive.
The challenge diaspora patients face — and how we solve it
The fundamental challenge of dental care during a home visit is time. Comprehensive dental treatment — implants, full veneer makeovers, orthodontic starts, full mouth restoration — cannot be completed in a single appointment. Some treatments have biological timelines that cannot be compressed: implant osseointegration requires months, orthodontic movement requires weeks at minimum between appointments, and certain restorative sequences must be completed in stages.
This creates a planning problem: the patient has a specific visit window, and the treatment needs to fit within it, or be structured to begin during the visit and continue with appropriate support between visits.
Novo Care has developed a diaspora patient protocol that addresses this directly.
Sequenced scheduling. We schedule your appointments before your arrival so your treatment visits fit within your calendar. The most clinically complex work is prioritised for early in your visit to allow maximum time for any adjustments or additional appointments.
Communication between visits. For treatments that span multiple home visits — staged implant placement, orthodontic treatment you are maintaining abroad we provide written guidance on what to expect between visits, what to do if issues arise, and how to reach our clinical team remotely.
What is realistically achievable in a single visit
The answer varies significantly by treatment. Here is an honest guide:
Achievable in a single 2–3 week visit:
Professional dental examination and X-rays, cleaning, and a complete assessment of treatment needs — always the first step for any new patient.
- Professional whitening — in-office whitening is completed in one to two sessions. Take-home tray whitening, with impressions taken at the first appointment, allows patients to continue whitening at home during the visit.
- Composite veneers — placed in a single appointment. A full set of composite veneers on the social six can be completed in one clinical day.
- Composite bonding and tooth repairs — same-day treatment for chipped, broken, or worn teeth.
- Tooth extractions including simple and some surgical extractions — completed and healed within a 2–3 week visit.
- Multiple fillings, crown replacements, bridge work — achievable within a 2–3 week visit with appropriate sequencing.
Achievable across two visits (one year apart):
- Porcelain veneers — preparation and temporaries on visit one, final bonding on visit two.
- Single dental implants — implant placement on visit one, crown placement on visit two (after osseointegration, typically 3–6 months).
- Full mouth restoration involving both implants and crowns — staged across two visits.
Requires sustained presence or ongoing remote management:
Orthodontic treatment (braces or clear aligners) — can begin during a visit but requires either remaining in Addis for the treatment duration or structured management between visits with a local orthodontist abroad.
Preparing before you arrive — what to bring and do
- Bring your dental records. Any recent X-rays (particularly a panoramic OPG if you have had one), records of previous dental treatment, and a list of any medications you are taking. This reduces the diagnostic work at your first appointment and allows us to focus clinical time on treatment.
- Book your pre-arrival consultation. Contact NovoCare before your flights are confirmed. The consultation is free. It will give you the clinical picture you need to plan your visit intelligently.
- Be honest about your timeline. Tell us exactly how long you will be in Addis and when you are available for appointments. We will design a treatment plan around your actual window, not an idealised one.
- Plan your priority. If you can only address one clinical issue during this visit, which matters most? We will ensure that priority is addressed fully before moving to secondary concerns.
