Deep Cleaning vs. Regular Cleaning: What is the Real Difference?

At Novo Care, we often hear the question: “Why can’t I just have a normal cleaning?” While both procedures aim to remove plaque and improve oral health, they serve two completely different purposes.

The Regular Cleaning (Prophylaxis)

A regular cleaning is preventive. It is intended for patients who already have healthy gums and no bone loss.

  • The Goal: To remove surface stains and plaque that have accumulated since your last 6-month visit.
  • The Depth: The hygienist cleans the visible part of the tooth and just slightly below the gum line.
  • Frequency: Every 6 months.

The Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)

A deep cleaning is therapeutic. It is a medical treatment intended to stop the progression of an active disease.

  • The Goal: To remove “calculus” (hardened tartar) that has calcified deep inside periodontal pockets where a regular toothbrush cannot reach.
  • The Depth: We clean all the way down to the bottom of the pocket and smooth the tooth root to encourage healing.
  • Frequency: This is usually a one-time treatment (performed in quadrants), followed by [Internal Link: Periodontal Maintenance] every 3–4 months.

Why You Shouldn’t Skip the Deep Cleaning

If you have periodontal pockets and only receive a “regular” cleaning, the bacteria deep in the pockets remain untouched. The infection will continue to eat away at your bone, eventually leading to tooth loss. Think of it this way: a regular cleaning is like washing a car, while a deep cleaning is like a full engine repair.
