When gum disease progresses to a certain point, Scaling and Root Planing may not be enough. If your periodontal pockets are deeper than 5mm or 6mm, they become impossible to clean, even for a professional. Periodontal Pocket Reduction surgery (also known as flap surgery) is a specialized procedure we perform to bring those pockets back to a manageable depth.
The Goal of the Procedure
The objective is simple: to fold back the gum tissue and remove the disease-causing bacteria before securing the tissue back in place.
- Cleaning the Root: Once the gums are gently moved aside, we can see and remove tartar that was previously hidden.
- Smoothing the Bone: In some cases, the underlying bone may have developed craters due to infection. We smooth these areas so bacteria have fewer places to hide.
- Closing the Gap: We reposition the gum tissue so that it fits snuggly around the tooth, effectively “shrinking” the pocket.
Protecting Your Long-Term Health
By reducing the depth of these pockets, we make it possible for you to maintain your oral health through daily brushing and flossing. This surgery is often the final line of defense in preventing tooth loss and protecting the jawbone from further erosion.
