Deep Cleaning: The Foundation of Gum Health and Tooth Preservation

Many patients are surprised when they are told they need a “deep cleaning” instead of a standard prophylaxis. At Novo Care Dental and Orthodontic Clinic, we view Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) as the most critical non-surgical intervention for treating periodontal disease. If your gums are red, swollen, or bleed when you brush, this procedure is the key to preventing tooth loss.

What Exactly is Scaling and Root Planing?

Unlike a regular cleaning that focuses on the visible surface of the tooth, a deep cleaning goes beneath the gum line.

  • Scaling: Our specialists use ultrasonic tools to carefully remove plaque and tartar (calculus) from the surface of the tooth and the pockets between the teeth and gums.
  • Root Planing: We smooth out the roots of your teeth. Bacteria thrive on rough surfaces; by smoothing the roots, we make it difficult for plaque to reattach and allow your gums to reattach to the tooth more firmly.

When is it Necessary?

We recommend a deep cleaning when “pockets” begin to form. In a healthy mouth, the space between the tooth and gum is 1–3 millimeters. When bacteria cause infection, these pockets deepen (4mm+), trapping debris that you cannot reach with a toothbrush. If left untreated, this leads to bone loss and eventual tooth loss.

The NovoCare Experience

We prioritize your comfort above all else. Because we are working beneath the gum line, we typically use a local anesthetic to ensure the process is entirely pain-free. Most patients find that their gums feel significantly firmer and healthier within just a few days of the procedure.
